The Amherst County Public Library was founded in November 1964 to serve the citizens of Amherst County. It began as a demonstration project of the Library of Virginia. It included bookmobile service as the primary means of outreach service throughout the county. The Amherst Library moved from its original Town Hall location to a former telephone company building shared with the Amherst County Public School System Administrative Offices. When the school system moved to a new building, the library expanded into the entire building and also added an addition, a process completed in 1991.

The overall library system now has a collection of nearly 100,000 items plus electronic resources and meets the educational and informational needs of all ages.

The Amherst Library also has a Friends of the Library group that helps to support the Library. You can join the Friends of the Library by downloading the form below and mailing it and your membership donation to the address on the form.
